On June 4, 2025, just yesterday, Alexander Lukashenko, President of Belarus who has ruled for 31 years, visited China once again. Xi Jinping received him at Zhongnanhai in a private setting over tea and a family-style dinner—the first time such a format was used. Xi joked, “My office is right next door; this is the first time I’m receiving you here,” which left the 70-year-old Eastern European autocrat visibly flattered and surprised. Lukashenko remarked, “Every time I come to China, it feels like coming home.”
This reception, which went beyond the norms of diplomatic protocol, was described by Belarusian officials as a “traditional friendly family meeting.” Chinese officials also emphasized that this was an unconventional arrangement meant to express closeness and to highlight the uniqueness of China-Belarus relations—a comprehensive, all-weather strategic partnership that transcends ideology.
Since coming to power in 1994, Lukashenko has visited China a total of 15 times. He has met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on multiple occasions, and the two have developed an exceptional personal friendship. According to Belarusian official statistics, this was Lukashenko’s 15th visit to China, and each time he has felt the deep affection and warmth from the Chinese side. Xi Jinping described the two countries as “true friends and good partners,” with unbreakable political mutual trust.
